These days, there are lots of so-called “logistics companies” on the market. You may have heard of these companies without actually knowing what they’re all about. Well, essentially, a logistics company specializes in shipping logistics, which is really the art of getting large items – or lots of small items – from point A to point B. To see what a logistics company does, let’s look at an example. If you wanted to ship cars to Russia, you might do so through a logistics company.
At the start, you’ll call a company and say that you want to ship cars to Russian port. The company will get as many details as they can about your needs and wishes, and they will help you come up with a plan to get your cars from the United States – or wherever – to Russia. The plan will involve knowledge about the fees that will be involved with this process, since you’ll have to pay for not only shipping costs but also the costs of getting vehicles through customs, which are usually things like value added taxes, or a percentage of the car’s total value.
As you work with a logistics company, you’ll start drawing up contracts for the shipping process and pinning down costs, which will depend on what you need shipped, when you need it shipped, and how you’re shipping it. You can, for example, ship cars to Russia either on boats or on planes, and each way will have its own costs involved.
The great part about a good logistics company is that they take care of not only the planning process but also the actual shipping process. Trying to ship to Russia can take a lot of time, since you have to prove ownership and such several times for the customs officials.
